UKTA Faces the Convergence Challenge

The UKTA continues to develop relationships with the Communications Industry in the United Kingdom and throughout the World.

Working with our existing stalwart members we have moved into new fields as our new members the GSM Association, THUS, St Patrick’s College and Infocomm Communications take our market reach to new areas.

The programmes we have developed with Coventry University and University of Strathclyde have both been reviewed over the past twelve months and new modules introduced on both the LLM and MCM Programmes.

The Relationship UKTA has established with Africa goes from Strength to Strength and Kigali Institute of Science & Technology (KIST) has already produced twenty outstanding graduates.

Our Relationship with China has been expanded over the past year to include Yinchuan where we are working with the North West University for Ethnic Minorities in an effort to share our knowledge with the most needy people of this vast country.

We have explored the establishment of new relationships with both India and Russia and with the ITU Telecommunication Standards Bureau investigated how academic institutions can contribute to the development of new standards for emerging technologies. UKTA has been appointed to Chair the coordination group investigating this feasibility on behalf of the Director of ITU-T.

Our partnership with our sister organisation the USTTI goes from strength to strength and we congratulate Mickey Gardner on achieving 25 years of service to the industry. The UKTA contribution on Purpose and Impact of European Regulation was well received by USTTI graduates in 2006 and 2007, will be repeated this year and beyond.

Legal, Regulation, Policy and Security feature high on the agenda of the Private Sector and this will be an ongoing item in the short term for UKTA. We will support ITU in this regard and a number of events will be organised in both the UK and abroad to increase awareness of this critical knowledge area.

I look forward to welcoming you to the United Kingdom and to meeting you when you participate on our many and varied events.

Professor David P Mellor OBE

Chairman UKTA
