Master of Laws (LLM) in Information Technology & Telecommunications Law

Delegates undertaking this qualification have a unique opportunity to study the legal implications surrounding Information Technology and Telecommunications on the world's longest established postgraduate masters (LLM) course in Information Technology Law.  This course has been provided at the University of Strathclyde by online distance learning since 1994, the LLM and the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Information Technology and Telecommunications Law is an internationally renowned postgraduate qualification which currently attracts over 100 students from 20 countries.  Recently the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the United Kingdom Telecommunications Academy (UKTA) and the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) signed a memorandum of understanding through which OUT are enabled to offer the same programme for students within the Africa sub-region.

Aims

This course is designed to give a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the principles, nature and development of legal aspects of information technology and telecommunications.  In addition to developing a range of generic transferable skills which can be used in a wide range of settings. 

Who Would Benefit?

Lawyers wishing to specialise in the fields of information technology and telecommunications law, in house lawyers working for companies active in the field, those responsible for the management of information technology or telecommunications systems.

Pre-requisites

Normally an Honours degree in law or any other degree with substantial legal content.  Other qualifications are recognised, especially where the applicant's work experience is relevant to the course.    

Content

Candidates wishing to gain a PgD in Information Technology and Telecommunications may select any four modules from those listed below.  For those delegates seeking the award of LLM in Information Technology and Telecommunications Law, a 15-20,000 word dissertation on a topic of your own choice is required.  Please be aware that owing to the changing nature of the subject area, the contents of the module may be adjusted to keep abreast with legal developments.  Students only wishing to do any two modules will be issued with a PgC.

Provider & Location This course is provided by the Open University of Tanzania (OUT). Lectures on each module will be conducted in Dar es Salaam or any other selected venue in Tanzania.
Charges & Administration Tuition Fee:  Students will be charged according to the module attended.  A tuition fee of USD1,000 will be charged for each module.  A further USD1,000 will be charged for the examination for the dissertation.  A complete LLM will therefore cost about USD5,000.
OUT & UKTA Processing and Certification fee USD250
Daily Charge:  Students are responsible for their own living costs whilst attending the courses.  Candidates undertaking research for their dissertation are responsible for all of their costs.
Duration Estimated time for completion of this programme for the award of LLM is two years
